Brooklyn Supermarket has evolved as one of the leaders in the industry, admired by both its customers and competitors and with its competent and dedicated group of employees is focused on creating long-lasting relationships with their customers.
Brooklyn Supermarket is part of the Progressive Grocers of Jamaica Limited forged in 1999 from the strength of a group of leading supermarkets. There are 25 stores in the group and according to Timothy Lym, its director who is also a junior director with Progressive Grocers of Jamaica Limited, the association creates an increased economies of scale.
"Our purchasing power is more centralised and through our distributors we are able to access better prices through bulk buying. We are also able to negotiate better prices that we can pass on to the consumer," Lym said.
Lym disclosed that prices in the supermarket industry are important to the consumers and as such, at Brooklyn Supermarket they try to source the best possible prices. Accordingly they only work with local distributors and have limited their imports to rice, which is a basic commodity, in order to maintain quality and price.
Their two locations offer a wide range of grocery and non-grocery items at competitive prices and a shopping experience that exceeds the expectations of their customers. Brooklyn Supermarket was first incorporated in Jamaica in 1987 at 49 Constant Spring Road, right across from King's Plaza. Seventeen years later they re-located to their Twin Gates location and in 2009 they bought their second location at 11B Hope Road.
Given the current economic climate, Lym said business is challenging as the costs are rising and it is difficult to keep them down. He said they are also concerned about the rising electricity and water rates, the former being one of the largest line items on his company's budget.
"We are facing the same increasing costs as everybody else. Our refrigeration equipment accounts for the most usage of electricity, and the electricity rate is very high," Lym said.
Discounts
As a sponsor of The Gleaner's Food Month, during November, all 25 Progressive Grocers supermarkets across the island will offer discounts on a wide range of items in more than 36 categories. Lym said supporting local Jamaican manufacturers and promoting locally made Jamaican products is their main motivation for participating in Food Month.
"It is a way of offering consumers a lower price on these products and to make consumers aware of our products and services," Lym said.
The discounts will be redeemable with Gleaner coupons to be published inThe Gleaner and the Star. Each coupon is valid only for the week that the product is being discounted, and there will be one coupon per item.
